Pet Travel Tips

If you're planning to hit the road for a Fourth of July celebration or a summer vacation destination, you'll face some special challenges if your pet is going along for the ride.

Pets are part of our families, so many of us don't think twice about packing our pets along when we head out on a vacation trip.

But, it's important to take some extra precautions to keep your pet safe during your road trip.

Animal expert Jack Hanna says that preparation begins before you hit the road.

Hanna says before you leave make sure your pet has a temporary tag with your contact information, like where you'll be staying during your trip, and your cell phone number.

Here are some other ways to keep your pet safe and comfortable during your summer travels.

Always use a pet travel crate or keep your pet on a sturdy leash, even while taking pit stops along the road.

Make sure your pets have access to fresh water at all times.

Go online to find pet-friendly hotels and motels. That information could also come in handy if you have to evacuate this summer due to a hurricane or tropical storm.

Hanna says something very important you've got to remember is never to leave your children or animals unattended in a vehicle.  He says also, be careful this Fourth of July, pets can be frightened by loud noises and bright flashes, so consider keeping your pets indoors while enjoying the fireworks.

With a little preparation, traveling with your animals can be fun and safe, for both you and your pet.
