St. Martin Parish Considers Resource Officers for Junior High

Police officers in schools.  It's a concept that has helped keep a lot of Acadiana high schools safer.  But are resource officers needed in middle schools?

A student at St Martinville Junior High made a threatening comment to a member of the faculty.  It happened last October and our camera arrived after the campus was placed on lock down for nearly two hours.  Supporters of resource officers say this is an example of a time when a patrol officer could have offered extra security in the school.

Children will soon be filling the walkways of St. Martin Parish schools but the question is should police officers be walking the halls of middle schools? That's an issue that the school board is discussing.

Right now three St. Martin Parish high schools have an officer to patrol the school.  The school board is considering adding three middle schools to that list when their contract is up for renewal this fall.

The cost for adding officers to Breaux Bridge Middle, Cecilia Middle and St. Martinville Junior High is about 145,000 a year.

Wednesday night the St. Martin Parish school board decided to hold off on making a decision about middle school resource officers for just a little longer.

According to board member Floyd Knott they might try to add new officers into a renewal contract for high school patrols.
