Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Awareness month and that has the American diabetes association campaigning heavily to one day bring an end to the disease. Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and aids combined according to the A.D.A. Also, one in three Americans will have diabetes by the year 2050 unless action is taken now. It's the reason why many hospitals in Acadiana want the public to be aware of the disease, especially those who are at risk for it.  Dr.Indira Gautam of the Regional Medical Center in Lafayette said those who have family members with diabetes have a higher risk of developing it and those who are obese are also at risk of developing diabetes. A simple blood test from your doctor can determine if you have the disease. Some of the signs of diabetes are frequent urination, always being thirsty, unexplained weight-loss, always being hungry, and in men erectile dysfunction can occur. If you have any of these signs you should call you doctor to get checked out. Rob Mallia
