A major milestone in the multiyear comprehensive planning process being conducted in Lafayette will be celebrated Saturday, June 30 from 9am to 2pm with the public unveiling of the Lafayette Comprehensive Plan Vision Statement. The vision statement comes from areas of consensus that emerged from the series of community forums and Meetings In A Box events that ended last month.
“Hundreds of citizens joined the planning effort in the first round of community input in the planning process,” offered City-Parish President Joey Durel. “Our planning consultants at WRT have been sorting, grouping, tabulating and distilling hundreds of ideas that Lafayette residents expressed about the community's future and consolidating it into a vision statement. Your input on this vision statement is important, as it will represent our shared destination and guide for the development of the comprehensive plan to come.”
The location chosen for the presentation of the vision statement has a major significance for residents of Lafayette Parish. The event will be held at the Horse Farm, the tract of land being transferred from UL Lafayette to Lafayette Consolidated Government.
“This is the people's park,” said Durel. “It was identified as a place worth saving for the benefit of all citizens by a group of students whose cause caught the attention of the community. Through the tremendous cooperation of Dr. Savoie, we hope to have something many communities will never see – 100 acres of magnificent oak trees, rolling hills and vast green space right in the heart of our community. I can't think of a better place to discuss a reflection of a shared vision for Lafayette in the future. The ties between that tangible part of Lafayette's future and our community's vision for the Lafayette of 20 years from now are too important not to link.”
Plans for the vision statement event are being coordinated by the Comprehensive Plan Citizens Advisory Committee and will be finalized over the coming ten days.
The Horse Farm is located on Johnston Street, across from the Winnwood Shopping Center. Parking for the vision statement event, which will be held Saturday, June 30 from 9 am until 2 pm, is available at Regions Bank, 2901 Johnston Street and the Winnwood Shopping Center.
