Cajun Football To Honor Shunick

Football season starts in just two weeks and University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Ragin Cajuns are ready to hit the field. But this season, they'll be sporting a little something extra to honor UL student, Mickey Shunick. Mickey was studying anthropology at UL. She would have began her senior year this semester. But following her tragic death, the Ragin Cajuns will honor her incredible fight for life on the field.

The Ragin Cajun football team is dusting their uniforms and getting ready for football season. And this year, Mickey Shunick's name and image will be on their helmets to honor one of their own.

110 football players will hit the field this season reminded of the strength of Mickey Shunick, a fellow UL student. UL's head coach, Mark Hudspeth was approached with the idea, which will be the first of its kind. “I thought it was a great idea,” said Hudspeth. “So, I approached the team and they felt the same way. You know, Mickey being a UL student, we felt we wanted to honor her and her family.”

Mickey's likeness will be placed on the back of every helmet for the entire season. And this is what the decal will look like. It's become a symbol of Mickey's story since the very beginning of her disappearance. Hudspeth says the Shunick family was on board with the idea right away.

“Once we approached the family, they approved the logo and gave us some input,” said Hudspeth. “And we're awfully glad they did.”

The Ragin Cajuns won the New Orleans Bowl last year and are hoping to reign as champions once again. But this time, they're using Mickey's heroic story as inspiration to get them through a successful season.

“I'm honored to have her name on our helmets because if we can just show one tenth of the amount of courage she's shown, we'll have a chance to be successful,” said Hudspeth. “And it might be a good reminder for our guys to be tough when faced with challenges this season.”

Coach Hudspeth said the helmets should be ready early next week, just in time for the games to start September 1st.
