LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) – A new Census Bureau survey finds Lafayette Parish's real median household income fell $5,000 last year. But a local economy-watcher doubts whether the decrease was real at all.
The median household income in Lafayette Parish, adjusted for 2011 inflation, was $45,172 in 2011, down from $50,213 in 2010, according to the newly released 2011 American Community Survey. But the decrease is within the survey's margin of error.
Meg Segura, Lafayette Economic Development Authority research coordinator, questioned whether median income actually decreased.
The Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/UmCN5v) Segura pointed to another statistic released by the survey: Mean, or average, household income increased from $64,981 in 2010 to $69,098 in 2011.
