LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) – The horse looked like a skeleton clothed in hide. But it found sanctuary at a rehabilitation program run by the Calcasieu Parish Animal Services and Adoption Center.

Director Nathan Areno tells The American Press (http://bit.ly/UNTtTA ) that Calcasieu is one of only a few parishes in Louisiana with a program to restore malnourished horses to health and find good homes for them.

The department has two sites where it cares for horses, giving them a veterinary check-up and a healthy diet.

Areno says more than 20 horses have been adopted since last year.

He says the department continues finding malnourished horses for several reasons, such as neglect or inability to afford feed and other supplies.
