East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Deputies recovered the body of a man this afternoon that detectives believed jumped from the Mississippi River Bridge last night.

The body of Roger Jarreau, 71, of 3303 Lone Oak Drive Apt #D203 was discovered by the EBRSO Marine Search and Rescue Division this afternoon in the Mississippi River almost a mile south from the Highway 190 bridge. According to reports, a passerby contacted EBRSO last night at approximately 9:04 p.m. in reference to an elderly man on the bridge railing. Deputies responded to the bridge at 100 Airline Hwy and found only Jarreau's cane and his empty vehicle.

Deputies ran the plates of the vehicle and responded to Jarreau's address in an attempt to locate him. EBRSO Marine Search and Rescue Division also launched a boat in the river to begin search efforts. EBRSO searched the river until approximately 4:00 a.m. with no results. The Coast Guard continued the search with the helicopter and boat and searched with no results until approximately 8:00 a.m. EBRSO resumed searching at approximately noon today and discovered Jarreau's body a couple hours later. This is a current death investigation, though at this time all evidence indicates a suicide.
