Fatal Crash in St. Mary Parish

This morning shortly after 1:00am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving an impaired driver on LA 182 north of LA 318.  The crash took the life of the unrestrained front seat passenger, 24 year old Donella Hill, and left the impaired driver, 23 year old Brittney Hill both of Jeanerette, LA, with moderate injuries.

Troopers' investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Brittney Hill was driving west on LA 182 in a 2007 Toyota Camry when she failed to negotiate a left curve causing the Toyota to leave the roadway to the right.  Upon leaving the roadway, the vehicle entered a ditch and traveled for approximately 90 feet before impacting a culvert and overturning.  Both Brittney and Donella Hill were unrestrained and were ejected from the vehicle during the course of the crash.

Donella Hill received fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner's Office.

Brittney Hill was transported to the Iberia Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.  Troopers suspect Brittney Hill to have been impaired at the time of the crash and have submitted biological samples to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicology analysis.  Upon release from the hospital, she will be booked into the St. Mary Parish Jail on charges of Vehicular Homicide, Careless Operation, and Failure to Wear a Seatbelt.

As seen far too often, the combination of driver impairment and lack of seatbelt use resulted in life changing consequences for not only the vehicle's driver and passenger, but also everyone affected by this fatal crash.  Making the right decision can often mean the difference between life and death.
