The U.S. Army announced Wednesday it intends to seek the death penalty in the governments case against Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the 39 year old soldier accused of murdering 16 Afghan civilians in March of this year.
Military prosecutors say Bales slipped out his remote base in the early morning hours of March 11th and murdered several unarmed civilians in a small village. Then after the attack prosecutors say he returned to his base before launching a second attack on another village.
Bales was on his fourth tour of duty when the shootings occurred. His attorney was not immediately available for comment.
