Crawfish season is now underway and farmers are getting their first peek at the crop.
Initial reports from Lafayette Parish show the crawfish are smaller than in years past but this doesn't mean the season is a bust just yet. Farmers are waiting until mid-February to make that call.
One local businessman, Pierre Choplin, says that because of the size and price, many restaurants are not buying right now. Instead they are relying on the crawfish in their freezer that they purchased at a lower cost.
Choplin's, located off of Highway 343, usually sells boiled crawfish to the public once the season is in full-swing, but Pierre says if the crawfish caught don't live up to expectations. They will forgo that part of the business this year.
