OPELOUSAS, LA. – Local business owners can benefit from local tech savy high school students through SMILE, Social Media for Intercommunity Leaders' Excellence, a free class at 10:00am Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the Opelousas Chamber of Commerce, 109 W. Vine Street. Dionne Davis-Green of UL Lafayette (ULL) will teach the two hour class, which is designed to show the business value of social media to include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other channels.
Davis-Green is part of the Business Supporting Faculty in the Department of Management at UL's B. I. Moody College of Business Administration. A St. Landry Parish native and current resident, she researches and promotes social media benefits for local businesses. In March 2011, Davis-Green was co-chair of the Louisiana Business Challenge, a competition in which Beau Chene High School (BCHS) seniors beat more than 60 other teams to win the BP-sponsored event. The BCHS students claimed more than $19,000 in scholarship money. The second round of the program is continuing as it was designed, with a long term goal of an internship program where local high school and college students can work with businesses to develop social media marketing plans and promotional videos.
In November 2012, teams from ULL presented their final plans to business owners. DryMax of Opelousas was one of the participating businesses and encourages other to follow suit. During the discussion there were many suggestions provided on how to use Facebook for businesses that had not come into play previously and culminated with positive results. “The most beneficial part of the program was the dedicated research time that resulted in a plan specific to our business model; not just a template for any business,” said Nicole Wenger.
Eligible businesses include those in St. Landry Parish with applications due by January 31. As seating is limited, reserve a spot by Wednesday, January 30 with an RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
