Harlem Ambassadors, Henderson Visit School

The internationally known Harlem Ambassadors visited Opelousas on Thursday.

Not to be confused with the Harlem Globetrotters, the Ambassadors work with local non-profit and service organizations to help raise funds, and provide entertainment. The team brought their comedy, basketball tricks and stories to Opelousas High for a special assembly Thursday morning. They delivered positive messages to kids from thirteen schools in the parish.

“I made it here today by making the right choice when I was your age, and I continue to make those right choices, ” Coach Ladè Majic said to the 4th, 5th and 6th graders.

She said the team spreads messages to children, from motivation to overcoming obstacles.

“We are trying to make sure they are literate. We are trying to make sure they are successful.  We are trying to make sure they are obedient. A lot of times, when you come from a small town or the inner city, sometimes obstacles are stacked against you and you think you cannot overcome them.”

Thursday night, the Ambassadors played a basketball game against several law enforcement officials, known as Team United. The game is a fundraiser to support the St. Landry- Evangeline United Way and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

“It's not always about what we can do in the classroom but what we can do as a community to send positive messages to our kids,” said Executive Director, Ginger Lecompte.

A special treat for the community, is a visit from Opelousas native, Devery Henderson. The New Orleans Saints acted as a coach for Team United and said he enjoys supporting the community that supports him

“This is my hometown. They've supported me and anytime they ask me to help out, I try to be there for them to show my support. Just giving back.”
