The Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA) named Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M. Veterinarian of the Year (Dr. Ralph C. Cooper Award). According to LVMA, the recipient of the Ralph C. Cooper Veterinarian of the Year Award is recognized by his or her colleagues for contributions to the veterinary profession in Louisiana. The nominee should also be presently active in local, state, and/or national veterinary associations and have shown an outstanding contribution to veterinary medicine, either through his or her work or through his or her actions and public awareness.  “This is truly an honor for me to receive this award. As a veterinarian by profession, my wife and I have owned and operated a veterinary hospital for nearly 30 years. As commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, I will continue to promote the safety and well-being of large and small animals, maintaining a healthy and safe food source and keeping the agriculture industry thriving economically,” said Commissioner Strain.  LVMA president Dr. Dale Peyroux said, “Dr. Strain has been a leader in both the veterinary field and in public service. He has been a steward of good government and as a veterinary doctor, his knowledge in and concern for animal health and safety transcends to keeping the public safe.” Strain is a past president of the LVMA. The recipient of this award must be in good standing with the LVMA to be considered.
