Wednesday February 13th began the qualifying process for Grand Coteau's special election for mayor and so far, two candidates signed up for the four year term. Interim Mayor Virginia Pierre and pro-tem mayor Shaterral Johnson both put their names in the mix.
They are hoping to fill the spot left open after the previous mayor Henry Pierre, who was also Virginia Pierre's husband, died while in office last year. His untimely death has fueled the interim mayor to carry on his work.
Virginia Pierre says her husband had such big plans for the city and he would have liked for her to carry those plans on. But Mayor Pro-tem Shaterral Johnson says she's running because it's time to put someone with experience in office.
Johnson goes on to say she has had years of political experience and that the interim mayor never even attended a town meeting prior to her position as interim. But Virginia Peirre says she's had the best teacher of all, her husband. The qualifying process ends this Friday and the special election will be held April 6th.
