On March 6, 2013, at 8:23 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 10 Eastbound east of Louisiana Highway 397, about four miles east of Lake Charles, in Calcasieu Parish that claimed the life of a woman from Welsh.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Mazda was traveling east on Interstate 10 in the left lane passing a vehicle in the center lane when the driver, 21-year-old Jermaine Quinn Pattum of Jennings, sideswiped the vehicle in the center lane. The vehicle Pattum was driving traveled out of control and struck a center guardrail.
A passenger in the Mazda, 24-year-old Harmonie Roshell Frazier of Welsh, was totally ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office. Pattum was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the vehicle in the center lane was properly restrained and was not injured.
Impairment on the part of Pattum is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
Troopers will charge Pattum with vehicular homicide, DWI, careless operation, driving with a suspended license, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
