The Lafayette Parish School System is filing for a grant that could level the playing field for children entering kindergarten. The Act Three Network Pilot Grant gives communities and schools opportunities to ensure all kindergartners enter school read to learn.
Every year five grants are awarded, and if Lafayette Parish is chosen, they could receive up to $350,000.Officials plan to put the funds towards working on and sustain professional developments within the early head start networks.
“We are going to hire some staff to go in and work with the school system on the new birth to five standards and then offer any other professional development based on what we see needed data and decisions from student outcomes” says Early Childhood Education Supervisor Christine Duay.
The grant is expected to be filed by Friday and the parish will find out in mid-April if they will receive the funds.
