Superintendent Jerome Puyau says as of next week there will be 60 teaching positions open.  Puyau says teachers have either retired or left because they don't like the new accountability system the state has implemented.

Even though the number of teachers leaving is high, the superintendent says not to be alarmed. Puyau says he is not concerned at this time because Vermilion Parish always attracts new and old teachers.

He says they are looking at recruiting recent graduates from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette while at the same time are open to taking in veteran teachers who are looking at teaching in a different parish.

Puyau says he is looking at ways to retain his teachers by giving them the tools needed to better understand what is being asked of them along with tips on how they are evaluated by principals.
