Shooting on Paradise Street leads to drug related arrest

A shooting in Lafayette leaves one man dead, a suspect on the run and one man in jail. On Wednesday morning at approximately 2:50 a.m., Lafayette police responded to a shooting in the 100 block of Paradise Street. Officials say two masked men entered a home which contained two residents.

“The detectives provided information that the door was forced open and there was damage to the door jam,” said Corporal Paul Mouton. They are still unsure if the door was kicked, shoved or pushed open.

Once inside, multiple gunshots were fired between the suspects and one of the residents, Joseph JeanLouis. JeanLouis was able to fatally wound one of the suspects. The deceased suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Spencer James Francis of Lafayette. His body, according to police was found outside of the home on the porch. The other suspect, according to eyewitnesses, fled in a light colored four door vehicle.

Police continued to investigate the scene into the late morning, and interviewed several neighbors. Although no motive has been officially released, JeanLouis was arrested and charged with the intent to distribute schedule 2 narcotics and possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance. Police said they have taken possession of JeanLouis firearm, but have no details on the suspects' weapons.

A description of the suspect at large has not been released, due to the fact he was masked at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Lafayette Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 232-TIPS.
