NOPD: officers, cover tattoos with sleeves, makeup

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas says that, starting Aug. 1, officers in uniform will have to cover up any tattoos. Union officials say the new policy could hurt morale and recruitment.

Current policy allows tattoos as long as they're not offensive.

The Times-Picayune reports that the new policy will require officers with any tattoos on their arms to wear long-sleeved shirts. Any officer with a tattooed neck will have to cover the ink with makeup.

The Police Association of New Orleans says more than 100 officers will be affected.

Department spokeswoman Remi Braden says New York, Los Angeles and Baltimore police have similar policies. She says they're aimed at a more professional appearance.
