The Farmers Market at the Horse Farm joins rank with the other markets in Lafayette. The City-Parish Council approved designating the market as a recognized festival or fair.
Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel explains the designation is simply a technical one. It takes the market out of the health department's jurisdiction. Requirements such as permanent structures and fenced in areas won't apply. Durel says most markets in Lafayette Parish are designated festivals. They're temporary sites only open a few hours out of the week.
“It's just something that's routine. There are certain rules that the state has. I talked to the health department about some of the things happening at the Farmers Market. They said once you get designated a festival or fair, that those issues are not our issues anymore.” said Durel.
The name of the market on the official designation was amended to read The Market and the Master Gardners Plant Fest.
