It's hard to believe it can get much hotter outside, but August is typically the hottest month of the year. And Downtown Lafayette is planning a unique way to stay cool. They're throwing a pick-up truck pool party at Parc Sans Souci.
You may have seen the New Year's “Polar Bear Plunge” tradition. It's the thrill event when people jump into icy water in swimsuits during the dead of winter. Well, Lafayette is now starting a new tradition that's not as crazy and probably far less painful.
“We decided to hold a contest to see who can build the best swimming pool in a pick-up truck,” said Kate Durio with Downtown Lafayette.
She says it's an ode to one of the hottest days of the year, according to local meteorologists. It's a contest for both individuals and businesses-a clever way to market themselves. And with only 30 spots available-may the best pool win.
“People are dying their pools different colors or putting ice in it,” said Durio. “Some people are planning their theme around what their team is wearing. I don't want to give away any secrets.”
Creativity is definitely welcomed when it comes to the pick-up trucks. But, as far as attire goes, it's best to keep it PG-rated and family friendly.
As a test run Wednesday, organizers built their first ever pick-up truck pool. And it didn't take much, only Visqueen, duct tape, and a lot of cool water. Durio is sure this will spark a lot of interest and become an annual event.
“I couldn't even find something like this done anywhere,” said Durio. “So, we're giving it a shot and so far, it's taking off.”
News 10's meteorologist Heath Morton will sit in as the dunk tank participant. The event is at Parc San Souci on Friday, August 23rd from 7pm to 10pm. For more information, click here
