A few years in the making, the Uptown Lofts have finally settled into Downtown Lafayette, creating a fresh new look at a busy corner.
“It's a fantastic look for downtown. It's very modern,” said Rebekke Miller with the Lafayette Public Trust Financing Authority.
While apartment homes like these would normally cost an arm and a leg, a one-bedroom runs at $595-a-month. In fact, applicants must fit into a certain bracket. For a single-occupant, yearly income cannot exceed $26,100. Its affordability is catching on for those who want to live and work downtown.
“Residents started moving in around February of this year,” said Miller. “We're now up to 66 of 73 units completely occupied.”
And there's now a waiting list according to Miller. LPTFA bought the land and plan from the Acadiana Outreach Center, which is now shut down. Miller says it's all part of their mission to provide a healthy environment for Lafayette's upwardly mobile population, complete with all the bells and whistles.
“(The apartments) are efficient. They all have washer and dryers provided to them. There's plenty of closet space and bedroom space. They're basically what we call, live play, work units,” said Miller.
The next phase of development is revamping a gutted warehouse right next door. It will be turned into artist lofts where artists can live and work in the same space. And the only thing lacking right now, is getting businesses to set up shop below the lofts. A coffee and sandwich shop is in the works, but Miller says there's a lot more space to fill to create the full vision of downtown walkability.
“LPFTA is open to any business that wants to occupy the space. We would love to see anything. I think downtown is in need of a nail shop or a fitness space,” said Miller.
