Proposed property tax turned back in Jennings

JENNINGS, La. (AP) – A softball league director has failed to persuade officials in Jennings to support a proposed 3-mill property tax to fund recreation.

The American Press reports Garett Mehal asked the City Council on Tuesday to put the issue before voters, but the measure failed due to the lack of a motion calling for an election.

Mehal said the millage, which would have generated funds to offer year-round organized sports for children, youths and adults, would have been a separate fund overseen by a recreation board.

Council President Stevie VanHook said that now is not the time to look at additional funding for recreation because the city has a lot of difficult decisions ahead, including the need for a new city hall project, a new technical college campus and infrastructure improvements.
