Closing times for bars in the Village of Maurice is once again making headlines and was the topic of discussion during Wednesday night's council meeting.

The village is the only area in Vermilion Parish where bars are allowed to stay open until 3 a.m.. Village Police chief Warren Ross addressed the council during that meeting after being asked how the new ordinance for outlining bars, forcing them to close at 2 a.m., has impacted the village.

Ross explained bar crowds have increased and taken his officers off the road because they are controlling the crowds at the bars ensuring bar patrons leave in an orderly fashion. Chief Ross has always stated he would like village bars to change times from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. Stating that Maurice does not need people who are already intoxicated from other areas of the parish coming into the community, drinking more and then going home.

Some argue that the bars are good for the Village because they bring in revenue. Village Mayor Wayne Theriot says at this point there is nothing on the books that would change bar times and that currently it's simply a discussion.
