It's that time of year again. New Iberia is celebrating the 72nd annual Sugarcane Festival.
The Sugarcane Festival is an opportunity to celebrate the farmers of New Iberia and the sugarcane industry. The festival also marks the beginning of harvest for the crop.
Events include a live stock show, car show and family night on Wednesday where guest could enjoy the attractions of the fair amongst many others.”
The attractions are great for the community. Certainly do bring visitors from many other parts of the state. We have queens and dignitaries that come into celebrate and it's just a great evening for everyone”, said New Iberia Mayor Hilda Curry. The festival may be held in New Iberia, but sugarcane plays a great role in the South Louisiana economy an has been grown in the area for over 200 years.
Mayor Curry said it's one of our largest industries in the city of New Iberia and certainly it's a economic engine for our community and we always enjoy celebrating our farmers and the sugarcane industry.
The festivities will continue throughout the week and conclude Sunday with the Royalty Parade on Main Street at 2 p.m.
