New parish jail at top of ‘wish list’

JENNINGS, La. (AP) – The Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury wants to use $10 million in state funding to help build a new regional parish jail to ease overcrowding of outdated facilities in the parish.

The American Press reports the funding request is part of more than $17 million in capital outlay “wish lists” being sought by the Police Jury to help provide financing for local projects.

The capital outlay request, which included funding requests for a new regional jail, fire station, community center and upgrades for rural roads and water infrastructure, was adopted unanimously Wednesday by police jurors.

Officials say the plan is considered a “wish list” since projects are only done as money becomes available from the state, and funds have been limited in the past.
