The Village of Maurice is steering its future in the right direction by forming their first ever zoning commission. That commission was formed at their last village meeting and is made up of five people.
The idea first came up after a previous ordinance was introduced restricting businesses from locating in certain parts of the village. But after finding out that ordinance wouldn't hold up in court if contested, it was suggested to form a zoning commission.
Village Mayor Wayne Theriot says the commission is looking to zone the village as light industrial which puts some restrictions on what businesses can come into the village. From there the commission will look into subcategories like commercial and residential zoning.
The zoning commission will make recommendations to the council, who then will have the final vote in zoning laws and ordinances.
