The Village of Maurice got an unexpected Christmas gift after a recent audit showed an additional one hundred thousand dollars in sales tax revenue. To be exact one hundred and ten thousand dollars was discovered after the school board did an audit. Results from that showed one unidentified company owed the village money.
According to village mayor Wayne Theriot, it's an unexpected but pleasant gift that's about double the amount they usually collect in a month. The mayor says this is a good reflection on the village, the businesses, as well as the citizens. The mayor says the money will be put into an account, where it will remain for emergencies only. While the village had positive news economically, it's a much different story elsewhere in Vermilion Parish as many municipalities saw a drop in sales tax collections.
