Winter weather response costs state $5.2M

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration says the state's response to the blast of winter weather and icy conditions across much of Louisiana has cost state government about $5.2 million.

The Division of Administration released the estimate Thursday, saying that includes equipment, supplies, travel and personnel.

Louisiana's transportation department brought in millions of pounds of salt and thousands of gallons of liquid de-icer to clear ice off roadways. The Louisiana National Guard activated 450 of its soldiers to help with the road maintenance. And the Louisiana State Police was out in force, assisting with accident response and highway closures.

The administration said it will work with agencies on ways “to absorb these weather-related costs in their budget.”
