A Mardi Gras tradition in Downtown Lafayette is no more. The annual Mardi Gras costume contest customarily held at 9 a.m. on the morning of Fat Tuesday, has been cancelled. Financial issues are being blamed for the cancellation.
A representative of Downtown Lafayette Unlimited confirmed the cancellation to KLFY today, saying the contest had become too expensive to produce. Another issue involved in the decision is that several categories would have only a single entry or no entries at all.
For many years, the contest had been produced by Downtown Lafayette Unlimited on behalf of the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association and was sponsored by the Daily Advertiser newspaper.
