A Morgan City man was arrested Monday after police say he stole 82 sacks of crawfish valued at nearly nine-thousand dollars.
Police say 41-year-old Shawn Stansbury had temporary use of a pickup truck with crawfish in it but sold the crawfish without permission and kept the profits for himself.
Stansbury was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a moveable and theft of more than $500.
Stansbury has since been released after posting a $50,000 bail.
The theft occurred at a time when the value of crawfish is higher than normal due to a scarcity caused by the cold winter here in Acadiana.
The average price at this time of year is $3 to $4 a pound but this year, the price is at nearly $8 a pound.
