Lawmakers cool to allowing wine ice cream sales

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Efforts to add wine-infused ice cream to supermarket shelves got a frosty reception from lawmakers who worried that minors could get drunk off the tasty treat.

The state's alcohol control office says lawmakers need to authorize the sale of alcohol-laced ice cream before it can hit grocers' freezers.

But just how to sell pints of Cherry Merlot and Red Raspberry Chardonnay and ice cream bars packed with whiskey or rum confounded members of the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

Ruston Rep. Rob Shadoin asked if DWI could mean “Driving while ice-creamed” if Rep. Marcus Hunter's bill passed.

Hunter shelved the bill temporarily to work out language requiring age verification to sell wine ice cream and putting other limits on access.
