A bill approved by the state senate committee on natural resources would temporarily stop oil and gas companies from expanding the use of salt domes around Lake Peigneur.
The committee advanced the legislation on a four to two vote Thursday afternoon. Many Vermilion and Iberia Parish residents around Lake Peigneur say the water occasionally bubbles, indicating a sinkhole could be forming.
The bill also addresses concerns that the energy industry would expand and compromise the integrity of the caverns.
The proposal now heads to the senate floor for consideration.
