WASHINGTON (AP) – More Americans are biking to work, though their numbers are still tiny compared to those in cars.
A new report from the Census Bureau says the number of Americans who biked to work during the 2008-2012 time span under study is estimated at 786,000. That’s almost 61 percent more than the 488,000 in the year 2000 who said they rode bikes to work.
The census says that of the nation’s 140 million workers, 86.2 percent carpooled or drove to work alone.
Only six-tenths of 1 percent biked while 2.8 percent went to work on foot.
