The Twentieth Annual Kyle Petty Charity ride across America made a stop in Broussard Thursday. The ride helps raise awareness for Victory Junction, a camp for chronically ill children. Many celebrities are taking part in the ride including Nascar Legends Richard Petty and Kyle Petty, Matt Kenseth, and former NFL player Herschel Walker. The ride stopped at the Shell Station on Albertson Parkway in Broussard for a brief meet and greet with fans and community members. Some of those participating in the ride told News-10 it’s all for the kids.
Kyle Petty: “What’s exciting is when we come to a city like this and all the fans come out. That is amazing. We do this for Victory Junction, it’s the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. We’ve been doing it for twenty years to send kids to camp. We’ve sent 17,000 kids and their families to camp because of rides like this and events like this. This is the 20th year of the ride and the 10th year of the Victory Junction camp and when fans come out, that’s the main thing because you know you’re getting the word out thanks to guys like you that have come out here today and it just helps kids go to camp.”
What’s great about it is, it’s a big family, it’s a big family and we’re riding together and we’re doing something for a great cause, Victory Junction, which is what it’s all about. That’s how I got started nine years ago, hearing about what Victory Junction really was. A lot of riders on the ride have been doing it for 20 years so I got a few more years to catch up.”
Since its inception 20 years ago, the ride has donated over fifteen million dollars to victory junction and other charities that support chronically ill children.
