A new Associate in Applied Science degree in Digital Media Design is expected to be offered this fall at South Louisiana Community College. The college is awaiting final approval from its accrediting agency, SACSCOC.
The Louisiana Board of Regents recently approved the program. Digital Media Design will replace the school’s technical Graphics program at its Lafayette campus. Current students in that program will be given the option to transition to the new program or complete the former one.
“We are continually evaluating our program offerings to be sure they align with workforce needs in our communities,” said Dr. Micheal Glisson, SLCC’s vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.
“Employers are looking for qualified candidates in digital media who not only understand technical aspects, but also know how to prepare projects and develop content. This revamped program will offer all of this.”
The college, with help from Louisiana FastStart, conducted an occupational analysis with digital media companies in the Lafayette area, which led to the development of courses in the program.
“Having a well-trained workforce is key to business retention and attraction efforts, especially in the quickly-changing field of digital media. Because digital and interactive media continues to be one of LEDA’s target markets, it is vital for local educational institutions to produce the graduates these companies are seeking,” said Gregg Gothreaux, president and CEO of Lafayette Economic Development Authority.
“Through the development of this curriculum, SLCC has demonstrated its ability and flexibility to respond to industry demands. The Digital Media program at SLCC will be an invaluable tool to our economic development efforts.”
SLCC officials met with leaders in the digital media industry to understand the new directions of the industry and this feedback was taken into consideration when the proposed curriculum was developed. The Digital Media Design program is for all persons interested in acquiring technical skills as well exploring the fields of digital media.
It will provide a concentrated overview of print design, digital video production, and web design, while also incorporating artistic and design concepts using industry standard software.
This dynamic program will combine comprehensive coursework and hands-on learning resulting in two tracks of study: the Associate of Applied Science degree and the Technical Diploma; and four certificate options: Digital Printer Designer, Web Design, Digital Video Editor for 3D Art, and 3D Artist.
