BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – East Baton Rouge Parish authorities are dealing with an increasing number of heroin-related deaths. Parish Coroner, Dr. William “Beau” Clark tells WAFB TV (http://bit.ly/TcZP5o ) that 13 people have died in 2014 due to heroin.

There were only 6 confirmed cases by this time last year. Clark said in 2013, there were 35 heroin deaths. In 2012, there were five deaths. East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney says heroin is a serious problem in parts of Louisiana, including Baton Rouge, Jefferson Parish and New Orleans.

The coroner said heroin is cheap and highly accessible in Louisiana. The body builds up tolerance to heroin, and users often need higher doses, which Clark says can often lead to overdose.
