A black bear sighting in Lafayette Parish is prompting a call for people to stay alert. Authorities with the Department of Wildlife and fisheries say Black Bear was spotted Wednesday by residents living along Ambassador Caffery at Louisiana Highway 89 near Broussard.
One person reported seeing a 200 pound bear, similar to the one seen on your screen, eating from a bird feeder around midnight. Authorities say bear sightings are becoming more common in the suburbs.
Now residents who live nearby are being warned to keep a close eye on children and pets and to hide any sources of food a bear could find.
Anyone who sees a bear is cautioned not to approach, as bears are considered dangerous when they are away from their normal habitat.
Police urge anyone who sees or comes into contact with the bear to stay a safe distance and immediately dial 911.
