Fire in downtown area caused heavy fire damage to a vacant house.
At 9:37 pm, Lafayette firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 500 block of Garfield Street. The fire was reported by several neighbors. When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the roof of the dwelling.
Emergency crews were able to get the fire under control within twenty minutes. The single family dwelling sustained heavy fire damage to exterior and roof area.
Fortunately, the adjacent homes did not sustain any fire damage. The home was vacant. It was unknown when the last time someone occupied the dwelling. There were no injuries reported.
Fire investigators determined that the fire originated on the rear porch.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
