Broussard Police responded to a residential burglary on Wednesday in progress on S. Jefferson St in Broussard. Upon officers arrival it was learned that a black male suspect attempted to forcefully gain entry into the residence and fled the scene when confronted by the homeowner. Officers immediately began attempts to locate the suspect.

A report of a suspicious vehicle was reported abandoned in the roadway about a mile away on Second St. While canvassing the area officers were flagged down by another residential burglary victim on E. Main St. The victim advised officers that a black male subject had just attempted to gain entry of his residence by force.

The suspect fled the scene when confronted by the victim. Broussard Police Officers, along with a Sheriff’s Office K-9, continued canvassing the area in attempts to locate the suspect.

Officers located a male subject that matched the detailed description, given by the prior victims, walking in a private lot in the 800 block of E Main St.

Officers made contact with the subject that was bleeding from the arm and detained him. While detaining the subject officers were advised of another attempted residential burglary immediately next to where the subject was being detained.

Officers made contact with the home owner and it was explained to officers that a black male suspect attempted to forcefully gain entry into the residence but fled when confronted by the victim, just as in the prior cases.

During the investigation, the detained subject, Shawn Marks b/m 42yoa of Opelousas, LA, was ultimately identified as the suspect in all 3 attempted residential burglaries.

After the suspect’s apprehension, officers continued canvassing the area of the crime scenes for evidence. During the canvass officers located a business that had been broken into by forced entry adjacent to the last residential burglary which was also later linked to Marks.

Marks was ultimately booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on 3 counts of Attempted Home Invasion and 1 count of Simple Burglary after he received medical attention for his cut.
