Mayor Donald Cravins will sponsor the Tools for Schools Supply Drive and Academic Pep Rally on August 9, 2014 at the Farmer’s Market in Opelousas. The event will be held from noon to 3 pm and will include distribution of school supplies, special guest speakers, free food and other surprises for the children.

“Over the years we have participated in countless school supply drives, but as I look around the need has never been greater. We want our children to head back to their classrooms with the right tools and the right attitude to make this school year their best one yet,” said Cravins.

The day’s activities will be geared toward the anticipation of the new school year. There will be distribution of school supplies as well as various local celebrities on hand stressing the importance of a sound education. Additionally, there will be various groups and organizations present to provide information on services they provide that may help parents and students throughout the course of the school year.

Cravins says, “Our goal is to provide 1,000 of our most needy children in the area with supplies they need to be successful this school year. This kind of involvement from our community can help to breathe new life into our schools and hopefully inspire our children.”

Any local businesses, organizations or individuals interested in participating are urged to call City Hall at 337-948-2520.
