A former Baldwin police officer is out on bond after his arrest on sex crime charges. Authorities say an investigation has revealed that former office Joseph Brent fathered the child of a teenage girl who was living in his home.
Prior to Thursday’s arrest, the Baldwin Police department had conducted its own investigation into former officer Joseph Brent.
Baldwin Police Chief Gerald Minor conducted an internal investigation into former officer Joseph Brent due to allegations that he may be involved in drug trafficking. When the investigation turned up nothing, he decided to bring in some outside help.
“On three or four different occasions we had people come into town from other agencies and pose as users to try and make buys from connections to him, or from him and we never could.””
It wasn’t until a 13 year old girl that was living in the home of Joseph Brent became pregnant, and a tip from a family member suggested that Brent may be the father.
“They were just waiting for the child to be born so that I could do an early on the child and on Mr. Brent. Yesterday, they got the results in and they came and arrested him somewhere on the highway, he was working when they arrested him.””
Joseph Brent was arrested on Thursday and booked into the St. Mary Parish Jail on charges of molestation of a juvenile, malfeasance in office, sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Officials with the Saint Mary Parish Jail told news ten that Brent has bonded out. His bond was set at $50,000.
