Sitting on Health Problems

A recent study shows that sitting for extended periods of time can lead to health related issues. Medical professionals say being seated for more than two hours at a time can be the cause of many health problems. “It can cause high blood pressure, it can cause high cholesterol levels, it can cause obesity and diabetes, all of those are well known and well studied” Dr. Chuck Wyatt, Cardiovascular Surgeon. But, did you know that excessive sitting can also be tied to the shortening of one’s life?

Dr. Wyatt says, “doctors at the Maya Clinic recently published for every one hour that you sit and do nothing you could potentially lose two hour out of your life.” Doctors have recently discovered that those who often engage in physical activity, may still be at risk of health problems. Physical activity by itself, doing it three times a week, 30 minutes a day or 30 minutes at a time, is a really good thing, but when you compare physical activity to sitting around doing nothing, actually the sitting around doing nothing will negate the physical activity, it trumps it!” Dr Wyatt says if you have a job that requires you to sit in front of a computer for most of the day, something as simple as taking a brisk walk around the property can lower you chances of health related issues.
