Lafayette, LA – On July 24, 2014, Lafayette Police responded to an incident in the 500 block of Acorn Drive involving a deceased 3 year old girl. The child was transported to an area hospital were medical personnel informed police that she had been deceased for some time.
The mother of the child, 27 year old Sarah Leblanc of Lafayette, told investigators that the child had been sick for a couple of days. The morning of the child’s death, the child allegedly fell asleep at 6:00 am and was not checked on until 7:00 pm that night. The mother told police she had never left the home. Investigators later received the autopsy report that attributed hypothermia with dehydration as the cause of death.
Through the investigation it was determined that the child went approximately 25 hours without food or fluids during her illness. Investigators also learned through video surveillance that Leblanc did leave the child unattended to go to a fast food restaurant.
On August 12, 2014, Sarah Leblanc was arrested by Lafayette Police and charged with Negligent Homicide. The investigation remains ongoing.
