A surprising discovery was made at the bottom of Bayou Vermilion Tuesday. A local man was riding a sonar sailboat when he discovered a car in the water and notified authorities.
The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Marine Patrol was able to locate a corroded license plate on the car and discovered it’s been in the water for at least 20 years.
Bayou Vermilion District C.E.O. David Cherami says it’s not uncommon to find a car in the bayou.
“We found four other vehicles in the spot so what we think happened in that case and what probably happened in this case is that thieves steal cars and use them for whatever purpose and then run them off the boat ramp and they float and sink.””
Cherami says the vehicle will remain in the bayou, unless detectives discover a missing person linked to the license plate.
