Lafayette drivers got an early Christmas gift today: gas prices below $2.
“I’ve been watching it,” said Blake Richard of Lafayette as he sat in his pick-up truck in early afternoon, waiting in line to pump gasoline at $1.99 a gallon, cash price only, at The Corner Market, 6000 Ambassador Caffery Parkway.
Richard said The Corner Market’s prices are the cheapest in the area, an assessment backed up by GasBuddy.com, which showed the convenience store and gas station was the first in parish to drop below $2.00 a gallon.
Store manager Candy Pierre said the price dropped around 11:30 a.m., and she fully expected the lines that formed to buy gasoline. The Corner Market has dropped prices every day for about two weeks, she said, and customers have responded by pulling in.
To get the low price, customers must be ready to pay cash, which Richard said he’s been doing regularly. He said he is saving about $200 a month since gasoline pump prices have plunged.
Marcus Fils of Sunset, who works as a salesman in the area, said he passes the station frequently and noticed the low prices. The first time he stopped, he didn’t have cash. Since then, he’s carried cash to fill his tank and is always ready to cash in on lower prices.
He said when he saw the $1.99 price Wednesday, he pulled in to top off his tank.
That was the lowest price reported in Lafayette this morning, according to consumers who report their purchases to GasBuddy. The second-lowest price reported was $2.07 at Sam’s Club, 3222 Ambassador Caffery, the website said.
