LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – A teenager was killed in a Christmas Eve fire in the 100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Lafayette fire officials said Brandon Gobert, 13, died in the fire.
Firefighters received the call shortly after 6:30 p.m. They found heavy flames coming from the front of the house. The victim’s father, Milton Gobert, came out and told firefighters his son was still inside. Firefighters looked for the teen while battling the flames, but couldn’t reach him in time. The boy was found in a bedroom.
Officials said Milton Gobert made several attempts to rescue his son, but wasn’t able to because of intense heat and smoke. The elder Gobert is currently being treated for severe burns and smoke inhalation at a local hospital.
Investigators said the fire started in the kitchen. The family was using the stove top for heating. Open flames ignited nearby combustibles and the fire spread to other parts of the house. The house was heavily damaged. Investigators are not sure if the house had working smoke alarms.
