Two former Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputies accused of beating an inmate now formally charged

Two former Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputies accused of beating an inmate have now been formally charged.

Brandon Gallien of Opelousas and Michael McSheffrey of Lafayette are charged with second degree battery and malfeasance in office. They’re accused of beating Jason Brungardt in his cell in March 2014.

State police say Brungardt was severely injured and had to be hospitalized for several days. Gallien and McSheffrey and two other deputies were arrested last June.
