LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball head coach Tony Robichaux will look to reach the 1,000 career win mark on Tuesday night as the Cajuns host in-state foe McNeese State at 6 p.m. at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Robichaux has compiled a 999-649-1 career record in 29 seasons including a 736-472-1 record while at Louisiana. A graduate of McNeese State, Robichaux posted his first 263 victories at the helm of the Cowboys.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (4-3) are coming off of a 3-1 week including a series win over Stony Brook at home claiming the rubber match of the series with a 2-1 victory. Louisiana has won nine straight contests against in-state opponents dating back to the 2014 season.
Freshman left-hander Gunner Leger will make his second start on the mound for the Cajuns this season following his first career victory at Northwestern State. Leger held the Demons to two runs on three hits and struck out four in five innings.
Offensively, Brian Mills and Nick Thurman both had a good weekend at the plate as the duo each registered three hits with Thurman driving in three runs while posting a triple. Junior Joe Robbins has a team-best eight RBI and two home runs on the season.
Louisiana has outhit its opponent in all but one game so far this season posting a .271 average with six doubles, three triples, four home runs and 32 RBI.
The Cajuns have won six straight contests against the Cowboys in the all-time series and 15 of the last 17 meetings as they hold a 90-62 series advantage
McNeese State (4-4) comes into the game having been swept by Bradley this past weekend, as the Cowboys were shutout in all three games.
The Cowboys will start junior right-hander Ethan Stremmel on the mound. Stremmel, a transfer from Galveston Community College, has made just one appearance this season allowing one run on two hits in 2.2 innings against Bradley.
As a team, McNeese State is hitting .252 with 15 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 22 RBI. Cameron Tool leads the squad hitting .381 with four doubles and four RBI, while Connor Crane and Matt Gallier are tied for the team lead in home runs with two.
Following the mid-week contest with the Cowboys, the Ragin’ Cajuns will head to Birmingham, Ala. to face Alabama in a three-game series at the Hoover Met starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
